Bedford
Bedford is located just 16.3 km (10.1 mi.) from Halifax, and consists largely of commuters to both Halifax and Dartmouth. Bedford, mostly a well-to-do suburb, is reputed for having many large, expensive homes. Bedford is a waterfront community, at the very tip of the Bedford Basin.
Originally, Bedford was called Sackville, in honour of Lionel Cranfield, Viscount Sackville. The name, Bedford, was established in the mid-1850s, and is named in honour of John Russell, the 4th duke of Bedford. Bedford has since been amalgamated with Dartmouth and Halifax County to make up the Halifax Regional Municipality.
In 2009 homes in Bedford sold for an average price of $286,166 and in 2010 there was a jump in property value with homes selling an average of $333,225.
Community
Bedford is home to a popular walkway, situated along a majority of the Bedford Basin waterfront, as well as an 82 ft (25 m) outdoor pool and smaller splash pool at Lions Park. In summer months, various lakes are considered swimmable. Bedford has two malls, and is home to The Chickenburger, a locally renowned symbol of Bedford. Bedford offers golfing, fishing, various museums and parks amung other activities.
Bedford Days has occurred annually at the end of June and beginning of July for over 30 years. Currently, most events take place at Dewolf Park. There is an Opening Celebration, Rubber Duck Dash, Free pancake breakfast, Dog show, Scott Manor House Tea Party, Kids' Extravaganza, Kids' Triathlon, Movies in the Park and a Canada Day Celebration.
The Light Up Bedford Parade is an annual parade that goes along the Bedford Highway from Bedford Place Mall and ends at Dewolf Park. At the park there is a hot chocolate stand, Christmas carol singing and contests and prizes. At the conclusion of the parade, a Christmas Tree is lit. In addition to bringing the community together to celebrate the beginning of the Christmas season, the parade serves as a fundraiser for the Turkey Club Society, which raises funds to ensure all residents of HRM are able to provide a Christmas dinner for their families. The parade takes place on the Sunday following the Light Up Halifax Parade, which is usually mid-November.
